In the old Mediterranean the capacity of a ship could be defined by the number of amphorae in could carry.
In Medieval Italy the capacity of a ship was stated in many different units:
Venice (13th century): Anfora = 600 l.
                                                Botta = 470 l
                                                Bigoncia = 150 l.
                                                Milliarum = 477 Kgf.
