Mapping
The purpose of accurate recording:
a) Keeping a memory (excavating
is destroying);
b) Understanding the site:
b1) The ship;
b2) Its abandonment (shipwreck, derelict, etc.)
b2) The site formation process;
c) Reconstructing the ship.
Typically archaeologists work
on the data long after they have forgotten the every detail of
the excavation.
