During the Battle of Valcour Bay in 1776, one of the cannons on the Gunboat New York exploded, killing one sailor and injuring at least one other. Most of the cannon was found by Edward Scollon almost 30 years ago but one section remained missing. The Texas A&M and NAP archaeology team, led by Dr. Chris Dostal and Dr. Carolyn Kennedy, retrieved the final piece of the cannon from underwater this summer. The fragment will be sent to the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum for conservation and study before being reunited with the rest of the cannon.
