We are proud to announce that the Nautical Archaeology Program is working with the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History as part of “The Gunboat Philadelphia Preservation Project”. The new exhibit will allow members of the public to see the Texas A&M NAP/CRL team including Peter Fix, the head conservator, and research assistants Angela Paola, Marissa Agerton, Alyssa Carpenter working on the conservation of the ship as well as learn about the boat’s history, research, and conservation efforts thus far.

The Gunboat Philadelphia will be 250 this year and sank during the battle of Lake Valcour Island in Lake Champlain in 1776. It was raised in 1935 and was donated to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in 1961.
