Bio

Deborah Carlson is a classical archaeologist specializing in trade and seafaring in the ancient Mediterranean. She participated in terrestrial excavations at ancient sites in Italy and Greece before assisting Dr. George Bass with the excavation of a Classical Greek merchant ship wrecked off the Aegean coast of Turkey at Tektaş Burnu, which she is currently preparing for publication. From 2005 until 2011 Deborah served as archaeological director of INA’s excavation of a Late Hellenistic shipwreck at Kizilburun, Turkey. Deborah’s research has been published in the American Journal of Archaeology, the International Journal of Nautical Archaeology, Hesperia, and the Journal of Maritime Archaeology. Deborah has served as President of the Institute of Nautical Archaeology since 2011 and Coordinator of the Nautical Archaeology Program since 2022.
