CRL Services and Fees

Analytical and Conservation Services

The CRL specializes in the conservation of artifacts recovered from underwater sites, but we also commonly conserve artifacts from terrestrial sites, artifacts stored in museum and private collections, and even modern materials. We have conserved artifacts that range in size from tiny glass beads and brass buttons to iron cannons and ship hulls. The services listed below are often included in our conservation contracts, but can be requested separately.

Our capabilities include:

  • Analysis: X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-radiography, optical microscopy
  • Documentation: photography, photogrammetry, FaroArm 3D laser scanning, 3D modeling, 3D printing
  • Conservation of glass, ceramic, stone, metal, organic, and composite artifacts from waterlogged or terrestrial contexts
  • Treatment removal and re-treatment of previously conserved artifacts
  • Freeze drying of organic materials up to 40 feet long
  • Packing of artifacts using archival materials

Consultation

CRL staff has experience acting as consultants for archaeological excavations, both in the field and providing general advice. We have also provided guidance for organizations interested in developing their own conservation facilities, with the understanding that there should be long-term plans for the facility, and that all conservation work is performed by trained conservators.

Assessments

Although CRL staff performs assessments for every artifact that enters our facility for conservation, we can also provide assessments for clients who are unsure which artifacts in their collection are the best candidates for conservation. Conservators will take photos of and perform a visual condition assessment for each artifact, which includes conservation recommendations and time estimates; this data is made available as a database. At the client’s request, we can include additional analysis, such as X-rays and XRF, as needed, or repackage the collection in archival materials.

CMAC Digital Image Use Fees (Per Image)

Digital images are included in CRL conservation quotes, and will be provided to the client at the conclusion of the project. Requests for images belonging to a particular project will be directed to that project’s client for image use permission. Requests for images not belonging to a certain project will follow the fee structure below.
